Millet Upma Recipe

Millet Upma Recipe

Millet upma is one of the easiest and tastiest dishes to make for you and your loved ones. Making it with millet is much healthier than making it with semolina. Millet upma is vegan and gluten-free, which makes it super healthy. You can even add coconut oil to give it a unique taste.

To make millet upma, you must start with washing ½ cup of little millet and then soaking it in some water for 15-20 minutes. After that, take a pan and add a few teaspoons of oil to it. Once the oil is moderately hot, add some mustard seeds, cumin seeds, chopped green chilies, asafoetida, curry leaves, and ginger. Fry the mixture until the mustard starts spitting and sputtering. After that, add a medium chopped onion to the mix and saute it for a few minutes until it turns light brown.

Now, add your veggies (chopped and mixed) such as carrots, peas, capsicums, or pretty much whatever you prefer. Add some salt according to your taste and saute the mixture for a few minutes. Once the vegetables are cooked, add a cup of water to the pan and allow it to come to a boil. After draining the water from the soaked millet, add it to the pan. Add some more salt and mix it all thoroughly. Allow it to cook properly after closing the lid for about 10 minutes on a low flame.

Lift the lid, and if the water is absorbed and millet looks grainy, turn off the flame. Garnish it with some lime juice, grated coconut, and chopped coriander. You can serve it with spicy coconut chutney.

And voilà! You’ll have a steaming hot dish of South Indian millet upma prepared traditionally. What’s more, you can buy organic millet from Desiauthentic to enhance the taste of the dish and elevate the recipe to new heights.
